Ukrainian Ladies

With the invasion of Crimea, the Polish population became very aware of the dangers facing the Ukrainian people. Refugees reaching Warsaw impressed Jonathan Roy, and his relief trips to Ukraine further impressed upon him the plight of its people. This limited edition of his small and large watercolors is in celebration of the bravery of the women of Ukraine. All were created in 2022 in Warsaw.

A series of 12 small watercolors in pen and ink, each portrait a fitting prototype for a “masque-ball” costume. Jonathan sympathized deeply with Ukraine during the war, driving relief caravans from Warsaw to the Ukrainian border and returning with refugees. Did some of them inspire him? We do not know.
